Understanding Real World Assets in Web3 Gaming
Gaming has always been an integral part of our lives, especially for entertainment or relaxation purposes. But here at Creo Engine, we’ve always been wanting to aim more. What happens when we push the boundary of gaming, from mere fun to actual earnings? Can Play-to-Earn be applied to our daily lives, beyond the virtual world?
Real weight assets (RWAs) are digital items in web3 games that have real-world value or utility. This means t hey can be used or traded outside of the game itself, often through blockchain marketplaces or other decentralized ecosystems.
RWAs can take various forms, such as:
- In-game items
This could include virtual land, weapons, armor, or other digital goods that have real-world market value due to their scarcity, utility, or unique properties.
- NFTs
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are a common type of RWA, representing unique digital assets with ownership stored on a blockchain. In games, NFTs can represent characters, in-game items, or even entire virtual worlds.
- Tokens representing real-world assets
Some RWAs are backed by real-world assets, such as physical collectibles or even real estate. These tokens can be used to represent ownership of the underlying asset and may entitle the holder to certain benefits or rewards.
How Plausible is RWAs In Web3 Gaming?
Real World Assets (RWA) in Web3 gaming is not entirely a new thing. The early seeding started around 2017–2018 with the birth of crypto collectibles, followed by NFTs boom all the way to 2019–2021. The rise of blockchain-based games and tokenized real estate that link to real-world value helped lay the groundwork for RWAs.
Furthermore, the adoption of Play-to-earn (P2E) games in 2022 has allowed the concept of in-game items and real-world values to continue to expand. Along with the focus on utility and interoperability, the shift towards RWAs across different platforms nowadays is becoming more and more connected and sustainable.
A good example of RWAs being incorporated into a Web3 game is Axie Infinity, a Pokemon-inspired game where players can collect, breed, and battle digital creatures called Axies. Stored in the form of NFTs, each Axie is unique and no two Axies are the same. Players can earn rewards in the form of Axie Infinity Shards (AXS), which can be used to purchase in-game items or exchanged for Real World Assets in the form of fiat currency.
Types of RWA in Web3 Gaming
Real World Assets can come in many shapes and sizes. So although anything can be tokenized, it’s important we differentiate the different types of Real World Assets. It also helps to understand how different types of RWAs work or their applications. Here’s a breakdown of each type:
- Tangible RWAs:
These are assets with physical presence and direct ownership, such as:
- Physical representations: Imagine owning a limited edition sword replica that corresponds to your in-game legendary weapon. This tangible RWA grants bragging rights, potential value appreciation, and a physical connection to your digital exploits.
- Tokenized real estate: Own a piece of virtual land backed by a deed tied to a real-world property. This RWA grants you in-game benefits like resource gathering or exclusive access, while potentially reflecting the value of the actual land.
- Collectibles with utility: Picture owning a unique, handcrafted figurine of your game character that unlocks bonus content or in-game perks. This RWA combines the tangible joy of collecting with practical benefits within the game world.
- Non-Tangible RWAs:
These are assets only in digital existence, can be fractionalized for multiple ownerships, but have great accessibility with no potential for wear or tear.
- Purely digital NFTs: Own a one-of-a-kind spaceship NFT that grants you access to exclusive interstellar trade routes or rare resources. This non-tangible RWA derives its value from its scarcity, utility within the game, and potential trading opportunities.
- In-game items with real-world impact: Earn tokens by completing in-game challenges, which you can then exchange for real-world rewards like store vouchers, concert tickets or merchandise. This RWA blurs the line between the digital and physical, directly connecting your gaming achievements to tangible benefits.
- Membership tokens with exclusive access: Hold a rare token granting you entry to a secret in-game society or VIP events. This non-tangible RWA provides exclusive experiences and potentially valuable networking opportunities within the game’s community.
